John Pryor (he/him)

My name is John Pryor, and I’m a gay, Christian therapist. I consider it a privilege to support and journey alongside others as they seek wellness. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Missouri and have been working in the mental health field for over 8 years. I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and earned my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2021.

Supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in navigating the complexities of their identity, including their spiritual identity, is deeply meaningful to me because it reflects my own story. My journey to self-acceptance has taken time, therapy, and unwavering support, helping me become the person I am today.

I first became aware of my “same-sex attraction” in the fourth grade. Growing up in a Christian home where this wasn’t an acceptable experience, I tried to suppress those feelings and fit into a straight box that never felt right. In college, I entered a phase of deconstruction, where I questioned long-held beliefs. For years, I believed I had to choose: either be a Christian or be gay. But that false choice never sat well with me.

During this time of deep questioning, I came out to myself and fully embraced this part of who I am. The experience felt both freeing and terrifying. I remember breathing deeply for the first time and simultaneously worrying about how others—my family, friends, and community—would respond. Yet, I knew I couldn’t keep denying myself.

I leaned into research and sought guidance from wise and compassionate mentors who reminded me of one powerful truth: God is Love, and I am loved as I am. This affirmation brought me peace. With the help of therapy and continued exploration, I’ve been able to integrate my faith and my sexuality, finding true self-acceptance.

As a therapist, my goal is to create a space that is free of judgment and respectful of every person’s unique journey. I value diversity and believe it makes each individual beautifully unique. My role is to walk alongside you, creating an environment where you feel safe to explore new strategies for mental wellness, deepen your self-awareness, and challenge negative thinking patterns.

Life can be painful, and change can be daunting, but you don’t have to face it alone. I’m here to support you on your journey toward wellness, no matter where you are starting from.

Outside of work, I cherish time with my husband and our dog, Harrison. We love exploring new places together, but I also enjoy quiet moments at home with a great book.

Through The Christian Closet, I offer individual therapy sessions at $185 per session, with limited availability for sliding scale clients.
